Zoloft Birth Defects
When a woman is prescribed Zoloft during pregnancy, the consequences can be deadly to the developing fetus.
Heart defects, deformities of the limbs and other body parts are all much more likely to occur in fetuses when the mother is using the drug during pregnancy.
Omphalocele is a birth defect in which the intestines, liver, or other abdominal organs remain outside of the abdomen in a sac even after birth because of a defect in the development of the muscles of the abdominal wall.
These are just a few of the many, many birth defects that can and do occur when Zoloft is taken during pregnancy.
More Potential Zoloft Birth Defects:
- Lung defects and deformities
- Respiratory problems
- Clubbed foot
- Cleft lip or palate
- Developmental delays
- Persistent pulmonary hypertension
- Birth with organs protruding from the abdomen (omphalocele)
- Heart defects
- Skull defects
- Brain and spinal cord defects (spina bifida)
- Premature birth
- Withdrawal syndrome in infants born to mothers who have taken Zoloft
In addition, babies can become poisoned by Zoloft through the breast milk when a mother takes Zoloft while breastfeeding.
More SSRI and Birth Defect Issues
Zoloft belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, commonly referred to as SSRIs.
Research has shown that babies born to mothers who have taken Zoloft or another SSRI after the 20th week of pregnancy are more likely to suffer from persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), which is fatal in 10% of cases.
Using SSRIs while pregnant — or even up to a month before conception — can lead to a fatal birth defect called anencephaly, in which large portions of the brain and skull never develop, and are missing at birth.
Keep in mind that only about 1-10% of all side effects that occur are actually reported as Zoloft side effects. This means that Zoloft is devastating more families than we could ever know of.
There are More Zoloft Lawsuits than Anticipated
There have been hundreds of claims filed against Pfizer because of Zoloft side effects and there are potentially many more to be filed.
The side effects you or your family have suffered might warrant a Zoloft lawsuit.

Another very serious reaction to the drug is suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. These are a known side effect in children and teenagers but also have been reported in adults.
FDA Black Box Warning for Zoloft
The FDA has even put a “black box” warning on Zoloft warning against the side effect of suicidal thoughts and risk.
A “black box” warning is the strongest warning the FDA can issue, and represents the fact that research has proven that the drug caries a significant risk of serious or life-threatening side effects.
Zoloft Side Effects in the News
According to an article published by the New York Times in 2004, The risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts while taking Zoloft has been documented since 1997, when 13 year old Matthew Miller took his own life just a week after beginning a course of Zoloft.
Has your child had suicidal thoughts because of Zoloft or a similar anti-depressant? A Zoloft Lawsuit could be your best option.
It has also been found that SSRIs (including Zoloft) double the chances of developing bleeding problems in the stomach and intestines. This can be evidenced by dark colored or black stools (bowel movements), please consult your healthcare provider immediately if you notice this symptom.
The chance of developing these gastrointestinal bleeding problems is 600% more likely if Zoloft is taken in conjunction with aspirin or ibuprofen.
A Zoloft Lawsuit may be your best option to accommodate for your injury and losses.
The Zoloft Lawsuits are Pending
According to Fox News, as of April 6th 2013 there are over 330 pending lawsuits at the U.S District Court for Zoloft birth defects.
All of the Zoloft Lawsuits pending in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania allege that use of Zoloft during pregnancy can increase the risk of delivering a child with severe birth defects, including pulmonary hypertension in newborns (PPHN), spina bifida and other neural tube defects, heart defects, abdominal defects, and club foot.
Victims of possible Zoloft birth defects may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
